1106 High Street ROWHOUSE to 1614 Woodland Avenue
An exciting project is brewing in the neighborhood. A move of the rowhouse currently at 1106 High Street into the neighborhood is being spearheaded by Rob McCammon. Rob involved himself after learning last fall that two historically significant structures, the rowhouse and the Murillo, were slated for demolition with the announcement of the Wellmark development. Since that time Rob and numerous others have invested an enormous amount of time and energy into researching the possibility and feasibility of saving at least the rowhouse by moving it into Sherman Hill.
In October Rob brought this potential project to the attention of the Sherman Hill Association board. Since then quotes have been gathered for the potential expenses involved. Research has been done into the availability of suitable lots and conversations have occurred with the shared goal of saving the row house and to request support of vested parties including; Iowa Methodist Hospital, Wellmark, the City of Des Moines and others.
The most daunting piece of the puzzle is the timeline. Although Wellmark supports the move, their timeline for development will force the move to occur by early February. The Association board supports the effort to save this incredible, historically-significant structure, but to do so we will need to progress quickly with a well-developed plan of action. We have recently acquired a suitable lot at 1614 Woodland Avenue.
The goal of this project in its purest form is to save a historic structure. While making a profit is a possible bonus, we don't want to lose any money either. A link for this project is being added to our website. Check the rowhouse link at www.HistoricShermanHill to watch a slideshow to view the property, read the related articles and review the timeline and proposed budget for this pending project.

Regarding the Murillo Building, due to its location, Wellmark is not as concerned with the immediacy of its removal. Research and feasibility of it as a Sherman Hill Association project will continue…stay tuned.
